Devotional: Genesis 12:8

“And he removed from thence unto a mountain on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, having Bethel on the west, and Hai on the east: and there he builded an altar unto the LORD, and called upon the name of the LORD.”

Genesis 12:8

Reflection

Genesis 12:8 offers a beautiful snapshot of Abraham's journey of faith. As he traveled, his first order of business in a new place wasn’t setting up his home, but building an altar to the Lord. This wasn't merely a ritual; it was a declaration of his dependence and devotion to God, even in unfamiliar territory. How often do we prioritize our comfort and immediate needs over carving out sacred space for God in our lives? Abraham understood that true security wasn't found in a sturdy tent, but in a steadfast relationship with his Creator. In our own busy lives, amidst new challenges or even daily routines, let's learn from Abraham. Let's intentionally 'pitch our tent' in a way that points to God, making time for prayer, worship, and humble submission. When we call upon the name of the Lord first, everything else falls into its rightful place.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the example of Abraham's faith. Help us, like him, to always prioritize building an altar to You in our hearts and lives. May our first impulse in every new season, every new challenge, and every new day be to call upon Your name. Guide us to create sacred spaces for communion with You, recognizing that our true strength and security come from You alone. Strengthen our faith, that we may always worship and obey You in spirit and in truth. Amen.
