Devotional: Isaiah 44:20

“He feedeth on ashes: a deceived heart hath turned him aside, that he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, Is there not a lie in my right hand?”

Isaiah 44:20

Reflection

Isaiah 44:20 paints a vivid, heartbreaking picture: someone feasting on ashes, their heart so deceived they can no longer discern truth from falsehood. This isn't just about ancient idol worship; it's a timeless warning for all of us. How often do we, in our own lives, consume things that offer no nourishment, things that are, in essence, 'ashes'? It could be pursuing validation in fleeting trends, clinging to grudges that poison our spirit, or believing lies about our worth or purpose. A deceived heart doesn't necessarily choose evil; it simply loses the capacity to recognize what is truly good and life-giving. Today, let's ask ourselves if we're holding onto anything that's actually a lie in our right hand. Is there a distorted belief, a misplaced hope, or a toxic habit masquerading as a source of comfort? Let's invite the Holy Spirit to shine a light on those areas, so we can turn from deception and embrace the life-giving truth of God's love and grace.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, we come before You with humble hearts, acknowledging the human tendency to be deceived. Forgive us for the times we have fed on ashes, for clinging to falsehoods and misplaced hopes. Open our eyes, Lord, that we may discern truth from lies, and freedom from bondage. Deliver our souls from deception and lead us to Your unfailing truth. Help us to release anything we hold onto that is not of You, and to embrace Your life-giving Spirit. Guard our hearts, Father, and guide us in Your perfect will. Amen.
