Devotional: Luke 22:23
“And they began to enquire among themselves, which of them it was that should do this thing.”
Luke 22:23
Reflection
Imagine the scene: Jesus, surrounded by His closest disciples, declares that one of them will betray Him. Luke 22:23 tells us their immediate reaction: they began to question, "which of them it was that should do this thing." Their anxiety wasn't, "Lord, is it I?" but rather, "Who *amongst us* would do such a thing?" This reveals a common human tendency to quickly assess others rather than humbly examine our own hearts. How often do we point fingers, inwardly or outwardly, when faced with moral failings, rather than stepping back to consider our own potential for misstep? This verse is a powerful reminder to cultivate self-awareness. Let us approach our faith with a spirit of humility, constantly asking God to reveal any areas where we might be falling short, rather than assuming it's always 'the other guy.'
Prayer
Heavenly Father, we come before You with humble hearts, reflecting on the challenging truth of Luke 22:23. Forgive us, Lord, when our first instinct is to judge others rather than to examine ourselves. Help us to cultivate a spirit of introspection, always open to Your light revealing areas in our own lives that need Your transforming touch. Guide our thoughts and actions, that we may live in a way that honors You, always striving for purity of heart and purpose. May we be quick to ask, "Lord, is it I?" rather than to accuse. Amen.
