Devotional: John 11:1

“Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.”

John 11:1

Reflection

The opening line of John 11, "Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha," seems straightforward, but it sets the stage for one of Jesus' most profound miracles. It reminds us that sickness, struggle, and even death are realities in our human experience. Immediately, we are introduced to a family Jesus loves deeply. This isn't a random sick person; this is Lazarus, brother to Mary and Martha, close friends of Jesus. This verse invites us to consider our own moments of vulnerability and the people we love who are facing hardship. When life throws its inevitable curveballs, it's easy to feel isolated. But just as Jesus was intimately aware of Lazarus's condition, He is intimately aware of ours. He knows your name, your struggles, and the people you hold dear. This verse is a gentle reminder that even in the midst of trouble, we are seen, known, and loved by our Savior.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the truth found in Your Word. Like Lazarus, we often face sickness, struggles, and moments of despair. Thank You that You know our names and the depths of our hearts. Holy Spirit, comfort us when we feel vulnerable, and strengthen our faith to trust in Your perfect timing and unfailing love, even when circumstances seem bleak. Help us to remember that we are never alone, for You are always near to those who call upon Your name. Amen.
