Devotional: Genesis 12:8

“And he removed from thence unto a mountain on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, having Bethel on the west, and Hai on the east: and there he builded an altar unto the LORD, and called upon the name of the LORD.”

Genesis 12:8

Reflection

In Genesis 12:8, Abraham, a patriarch of faith, sets an incredible example for us. After journeying, he doesn't just settle for pitching his tent; he immediately builds an altar to the Lord and calls upon His name. This wasn't a one-time event, but a consistent pattern throughout his life. Abraham understood the importance of prioritizing his relationship with God, even amidst his travels and new beginnings. Today, our 'tents' might be our homes, workplaces, or even our daily routines. Do we make space, both physically and spiritually, to build an altar – a place of intentional devotion – to the Lord? Life can quickly fill with distractions, but like Abraham, we are called to establish moments of communion with God. It's in these moments that we find our true bearings, our peace, and our purpose, allowing His presence to guide our every step.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the example of Abraham's faith. Help us to cultivate a heart that prioritizes You above all else. In our busy lives, remind us to consciously build 'altars' of worship and devotion. May our homes and our hearts be places where Your name is called upon and Your presence is cherished. Strengthen our resolve to seek You first, knowing that all good things flow from a deep relationship with You. Amen.
