Devotional: 1 Thessalonians 5:15

“See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men.”

1 Thessalonians 5:15

Reflection

In a world that often demands an 'eye for an eye,' 1 Thessalonians 5:15 offers a radical call to grace and goodness. It challenges us to rise above the natural human impulse to retaliate when wronged. Think about the last time someone slighted you, snapped at you, or deliberately hurt your feelings. Our immediate reaction might be to lash back, to return their negativity with our own. But this verse reminds us that as followers of Christ, we are called to a higher standard. Following what is good, both within our Christian community and towards everyone we encounter, isn't always easy. It requires intentionality, prayer, and a heart open to the Holy Spirit's guidance. It means choosing kindness when offense is given, offering forgiveness when anger is warranted, and extending compassion when judgment feels easier. When we choose good, we reflect the very nature of God, bringing light into darkness and peace into conflict. Let this verse be a daily reminder to be an agent of goodness in every interaction.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your endless grace and love, which we so often fail to extend to others. Forgive us, Lord, for the times we have given in to the urge to repay evil with evil. Strengthen our hearts and minds, we pray, to always follow what is good, just as Your Son, Jesus, did. Help us to be instruments of Your peace and kindness in our families, communities, and in every corner of our lives. May our actions always glorify Your name and draw others closer to Your light. Amen.
