Devotional: Nehemiah 8:3

“And he read therein before the street that was before the water gate from the morning until midday, before the men and the women, and those that could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive unto the book of the law.”

Nehemiah 8:3

Reflection

Imagine the scene described in Nehemiah 8:3 – a multitude gathered, their ears attentive as Ezra reads from the Book of the Law for hours. There was a hunger, a deep longing for God's Word, after years of silence and neglect. This passage reminds us of the profound power and essential nature of Scripture. In our fast-paced world, it's easy to let distractions pull us away from extended time in God's presence, from truly listening to His voice through His Word. Like the people before the Water Gate, when we intentionally set aside time to immerse ourselves in Scripture, our hearts are stirred, our understanding deepens, and our spirits are refreshed. Let's cultivate that same attentive spirit, allowing God's Word to transform and guide us daily.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, we thank You for giving us Your living and active Word. Like the people of Nehemiah's time, we pray for hearts that are attentive and hungry for Your truth. Open our understanding, Lord, as we read and meditate on Scripture. Help us to guard against distractions and to create space in our lives to truly listen to Your voice. May Your Word be a lamp to our feet and a light to our path, guiding our steps and transforming our lives from the inside out. In Jesus' name, Amen.
