Devotional: 1 Thessalonians 5:15

“See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men.”

1 Thessalonians 5:15

Reflection

In a world that often operates on a 'eye for an eye' mentality, 1 Thessalonians 5:15 calls us to a higher standard. It's so easy to react in kind when someone treats us unfairly, speaks unkindly, or acts selfishly. Our natural inclination might be to defend ourselves, to 'get even,' or to withdraw. But this verse challenges us to pause and consider a different path: to not render evil for evil, but instead to actively pursue what is good. This isn't just about avoiding revenge; it’s about choosing to sow seeds of grace, understanding, and kindness, not only within our Christian community but also with everyone we encounter. Imagine the transformation if we, as believers, consistently chose good. This proactive pursuit of goodness can feel counter-cultural and even difficult, especially when our emotions are stirred. Yet, it's in these moments that our faith truly shines, reflecting the love and character of Christ to a watching world. Let's strive today to be agents of goodness, light, and peace, even when it's challenging.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your word that guides and transforms us. We confess that it's often difficult to respond with good when we've been wronged. Our human nature inclines us towards retaliation or self-preservation. Lord, forgive us for the times we've failed to follow Your command. Strengthen us by Your Holy Spirit to overlook offenses and to actively pursue what is good in all our interactions. Help us to be Your vessels of love and grace, reflecting Christ's character to those around us, both within the church and to the world. May our lives bring glory to Your name as we choose goodness. Amen.
