Devotional: Habakkuk 3:16
“When I heard, my belly trembled; my lips quivered at the voice: rottenness entered into my bones, and I trembled in myself, that I might rest in the day of trouble: when he cometh up unto the people, he will invade them with his troops.”
Habakkuk 3:16
Reflection
Habakkuk's raw honesty in this verse is a stark reminder that even prophets experience fear and trembling in the face of God's power and impending judgment. He felt it deep in his bones, a visceral reaction to what he heard God was about to do. We too, often face situations that cause our 'bellies to tremble' and our 'lips to quiver.' Whether it's a difficult diagnosis, job uncertainty, or global unrest, fear can be a paralyzing force. Yet, Habakkuk's trembling also held a purpose: "that I might rest in the day of trouble." His fear, confronted and acknowledged, ultimately led him to a deeper trust in God's sovereignty. When life feels like it's crumbling, we can bring our trembling hearts to God, knowing that even in our weakness, He is our strength and our ultimate rest.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, we confess that there are times our hearts tremble within us, just like Habakkuk's. The uncertainties of life, the pain we witness, and even the conviction of Your holiness can fill us with a profound sense of awe and sometimes, fear. Lord, help us to surrender our trembling to You. Grant us the grace to find rest in Your presence, even when the world around us is in turmoil. May our fear transform into a deeper trust, knowing that You are always in control and Your perfect love casts out all fear. Amen.
