Devotional: Nahum 1:2
“God is jealous, and the LORD revengeth; the LORD revengeth, and is furious; the LORD will take vengeance on his adversaries, and he reserveth wrath for his enemies.”
Nahum 1:2
Reflection
Nahum 1:2 can initially evoke a sense of fear, painting a picture of a wrathful God. However, when we understand God's jealousy in the context of His covenant love, it transforms into something profoundly reassuring. His 'jealousy' isn't akin to human envy; it's a passionate, protective love for His people and for His own holiness. He is jealous for *us*, wanting our wholehearted devotion and guarding us from anything that would harm our relationship with Him. When we experience injustice or see evil prevail, this verse reminds us that God is not indifferent. He sees, He cares, and in His perfect timing and perfect way, He will bring justice. This isn't about us seeking vengeance, but trusting that God is ultimately in control, righting wrongs and bringing about His righteous purposes. It's a call to trust His sovereignty, even when faced with life's profound challenges.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, we come before You with humble hearts, acknowledging Your supreme power and righteousness. We confess that at times, understanding Your 'jealousy' and 'wrath' can be daunting. Help us to grasp Your fierce love and protective nature, knowing that Your justice ultimately serves to restore and redeem. Strengthen our faith, Lord, to trust in Your perfect timing when we face adversity or witness injustice. May we rest in the assurance that You are indeed a God who sees, cares, and will ultimately set all things right. In Jesus' name, Amen.
