Devotional: Jeremiah 17:2
“Whilst their children remember their altars and their groves by the green trees upon the high hills.”
Jeremiah 17:2
Reflection
Jeremiah 17:2 paints a vivid and somewhat sobering picture of a generation so entrenched in idolatry that their children inherently remember and continue these practices. It's a powerful reminder of the legacy we unknowingly, or knowingly, pass down to the next generation. While we might not have literal altars or groves today, consider what 'altars' and 'groves' exist in our modern lives. Is it the pursuit of success above all else? The idolization of comfort, financial security, or even self-reliance? Our children are keenly observing what we prioritize, what we worship with our time, energy, and resources. They are remembering the sources of our joy, our comfort, and our security. This verse challenges us to examine our own hearts and lives. Are we building altars to God, dedicating our lives to Him and His truth, so that our children will remember Him? Or are we, unintentionally, leading them down a path of worshipping other things? May we be intentional in our faith, modeling a life surrendered to Christ, so that our children inherit a legacy of seeking the living God.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, we come before you with hearts open to Your truth. Jeremiah 17:2 reminds us of the profound impact our lives have on those who follow us. Forgive us for the times we have unknowingly placed other things before You, creating 'altars' that draw attention away from Your divine glory. Help us, Lord, to live lives that clearly demonstrate our devotion to You. May our choices, our priorities, and our love for You be so evident that our children and future generations remember only Your goodness and faithfulness. Guide us in building a legacy of faith that honors and glorifies Your name. Amen.
