Devotional: Proverbs 16:27

“An ungodly man diggeth up evil: and in his lips there is as a burning fire.”

Proverbs 16:27

Reflection

Proverbs 16:27 paints a vivid, almost frightening, picture of the destructive power of ungodly speech. It describes someone who actively 'digs up evil' – not just stumbling upon it, but intentionally seeking out, fabricating, or dwelling on negativity, gossip, and malice. Then, this unearthed evil becomes a 'burning fire' on their lips, scorching relationships, reputations, and peace. It's a stark reminder that our words carry immense weight and consequence. We've all experienced the sting of a harsh word or the warmth of an encouraging one. This verse challenges us to examine our own hearts and mouths. Are we digging up evil, or are we cultivating good? Are our words fanning flames of discord, or are they bringing light and life? Let's ask the Holy Spirit to purify our thoughts and guard our tongues, so that what flows from us builds up, heals, and reflects Christ's love, rather than burning down what He seeks to build.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, we come before You acknowledging the power of our words, as highlighted in Proverbs 16:27. Forgive us for the times our lips have been like burning fires, causing hurt or spreading negativity. Search our hearts, Lord, and reveal any tendency within us to 'dig up evil.' We pray for Your Holy Spirit to guard our tongues, to sanctify our speech, and to fill us with words that are life-giving, encouraging, and glorifying to You. May our communication always reflect Your love and grace. Amen.
