Devotional: Joshua 1:17

Imagine the weight on Joshua's shoulders. Moses, the mighty leader who parted the Red Sea and spoke with God face to face, was gone. Now it was Joshua's turn to lead a vast, often rebellious, nation into the Promised Land. The people's words in Joshua 1:17 must have been an incredible encouragement: "As we hearkened unto Moses in all things, so will we hearken unto thee: only the LORD thy God be with thee, as he was with Moses." They pledged their allegiance, but their ultimate hope and condition were for God's presence. This verse reminds us that true leadership, and true living, isn't about our own strength or wisdom, but about God's presence. Just as Joshua needed God with him, we too need His guiding hand in every step of our lives. When we face new challenges, a new job, a difficult relationship, an uncertain future, we can find courage not in our own abilities, but in the faithful promise that the Lord our God is with us, just as He has been with countless believers before us. Let us step forward with the confidence that His presence is our greatest asset and our ultimate assurance.

Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your unfailing presence in our lives. Just as You were with Moses and Joshua, we pray for Your Spirit to be with us in every endeavor. Strengthen our faith, Lord, that we might step out in obedience, trusting that Your guidance will light our path. Help us to hear Your voice and to follow Your commands, just as the Israelites pledged to follow Joshua. May Your presence be our comfort in fear, our wisdom in confusion, and our strength in weakness. We surrender our plans to You, knowing that with You by our side, we can face anything. Amen.
