Devotional: Colossians 3:5

Colossians 3:5 gives us a powerful, though challenging, directive: to 'mortify' or put to death the earthly desires that pull us away from Christ. This isn't about self-hatred, but rather about self-mastery through the power of the Holy Spirit. Imagine a gardener diligently pruning away dead branches so that the healthy parts of the plant can flourish and bear fruit. Similarly, we are called to actively identify and eliminate those desires within us – whether it's lust, greed, or idolatry – that choke our spiritual growth and distract us from God's perfect will. This can feel daunting, but remember, we don't do this in our own strength. It's a daily surrender, asking God to empower us to live out the new identity we have in Christ. When we choose to crucify these earthly appetites, we make room for His purity, love, and righteousness to reign in our hearts. It's a journey of freedom, allowing us to live a life truly abundant and focused on what truly matters.

Heavenly Father, we come before You, acknowledging the truth in Your Word. We confess that our earthly desires often battle against Your Spirit within us. Grant us the courage and strength, Lord, to mortify the sins listed in Colossians 3:5 and any other impurities that hinder our walk with You. Help us to actively put to death fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness. Fill us with Your Holy Spirit, empowering us to live a life that reflects Your holiness and righteousness. May our hearts be solely devoted to You. Amen.
