Devotional: Luke 15:12

“And the younger of them said to his father, Father, give me the portion of goods that falleth to me. And he divided unto them his living.”

Luke 15:12

Reflection

Luke 15:12 introduces us to a young man who, despite having a loving father and a secure home, desired immediate independence and his inheritance. He essentially wished his father were dead, asking for his share 'now.' This verse resonates deeply because, in our own lives, how often do we, too, demand what we believe is ours, forgetting the wisdom of patience or the blessings of being under a loving, guiding hand? We might crave instant gratification, a quicker path to success, or a comfortable life without the process of growth. This son's bold request highlights a common human tendency to grasp for control and autonomy, sometimes at the expense of our relationship with the Giver. Yet, the father, in his incredible patience and love, granted his son's wish. It's a powerful reminder that God often allows us the freedom to make our own choices, even when those choices lead us away from His best plan. He respects our free will, hoping we will learn and, like the prodigal, eventually find our way back home to His waiting embrace.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, we come before You with humble hearts, reflecting on the impatience and self-centered desires often present within us. Forgive us when we demand our own way, seeking immediate gratification rather than trusting Your perfect timing and infinite wisdom. Grant us the grace to recognize Your loving hand even when it feels like You are granting us 'our portion' to learn hard lessons. Help us to value the security and love of Your presence above all earthly inheritance, and to always seek Your will. Amen.
