Devotional: Colossians 1:24
“Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body’s sake, which is the church:”
Colossians 1:24
Reflection
Colossians 1:24 is a powerful and perhaps initially perplexing verse. Paul declares he *rejoices* in his sufferings for the Colossians, filling up what is 'behind of the afflictions of Christ' for the Church. This isn't about Christ's suffering on the cross being incomplete – that was perfect and sufficient. Instead, Paul's joy stems from participating in the ongoing outworking of Christ's redemptive work in the world. He understands that spreading the Gospel and building up believers often involves hardship, mirroring the path Christ walked.
For us today, this verse challenges our perspective on difficulties. When we face struggles – whether in our spiritual walk, our relationships, or our efforts to serve God – can we find joy? Can we see our 'afflictions' not as pointless pain, but as opportunities to identify with Christ and contribute to His body, the Church? It reminds us that our trials, when surrendered to God, can be instruments for His glory and for the strengthening of His people. Let's embrace the call to suffer redemptively, for His body's sake.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, we come before You with hearts open to the challenging truth of Colossians 1:24. Grant us the grace to understand and embrace Paul's perspective on suffering. When trials come, help us not to shrink back, but to see them as opportunities to identify with Christ and to serve Your Church. Strengthen our faith, Lord, that we might rejoice even in tribulation, knowing that our afflictions can contribute to Your eternal purposes. May our lives, even in their brokenness, bring glory to Your name and build up Your precious body. Amen.
