Devotional: Exodus 15:23

“And when they came to Marah, they could not drink of the waters of Marah, for they were bitter: therefore the name of it was called Marah.”

Exodus 15:23

Reflection

The Israelites had just witnessed a mighty miracle, the parting of the Red Sea. Their hearts were filled with songs of praise, their steps buoyed by freedom. Yet, after only three days in the wilderness, they encountered Marah – a place of bitter water. Their celebration quickly turned to complaint, their faith challenged by immediate hardship. How often do we find ourselves in a similar predicament? God delivers us from one challenge, and we quickly face another, equally daunting, equally 'bitter.' Life promises us journeys through wilderness seasons, where resources seem scarce and comfort is fleeting. The 'bitter waters' of disappointment, illness, financial strain, or relational conflict can quickly extinguish the joy of past victories. In these moments, it's easy to forget God's faithfulness and focus only on the bitterness before us. But Marah isn't the end; it's a test. It's an invitation for God to show up in a new way, to transform the undrinkable into sustenance. He specializes in turning bitter into sweet, hardship into testimony. Trust Him even when the taste is unpleasant.

Prayer

Heavenly Father, we confess that our faith often wavers when we encounter the bitter waters of life. We are quick to complain, forgetting Your past faithfulness and mighty deliverances. Forgive us for our short-sightedness and lack of trust. Help us to look to You in every wilderness season, believing that You can sweeten any bitterness and provide for our needs. Grant us the patience to wait for Your intervention and the wisdom to learn from these trials. May our experiences at 'Marah' draw us closer to Your transforming power. Amen.
